Common Reasons Your AC Is Running But Not Cooling

Your System May Be Undersized for Your Home

One of the most overlooked causes of AC not reaching set temperature is a unit that simply is not big enough for the space it is supposed to cool. Low Refrigerant or a Leak in the System

Refrigerant is what allows your air conditioner to absorb heat from inside the home and transfer it outside. When refrigerant levels drop because of a slow leak or an improper charge from a previous service visit, the system loses its ability to cool effectively.

Dirty Evaporator or Condenser Coils

Your AC has two sets of coils that must stay clean to transfer heat properly. The evaporator coil inside the air handler absorbs heat from your indoor air, while the condenser coil in the outdoor unit releases that heat to the outside. When either coil becomes coated in dirt and debris, heat transfer is significantly reduced. A heavily fouled evaporator coil can eventually ice over and block airflow altogether.

Dirty condenser coils prevent the system from releasing heat, which forces the equipment to work harder without ever achieving the temperature you set. Keeping both coils clean through regular preventive maintenance is the most effective way to prevent this from becoming a recurring problem.

Thermostat Calibration or Placement Issues

Sometimes the reason your AC seems to be running but not cooling is tied to the thermostat rather than the equipment itself. A thermostat placed near a heat source, in direct sunlight, or close to a leaky exterior wall can read temperatures inaccurately and trigger longer cooling cycles based on faulty data.

A slightly miscalibrated thermostat can cause the same issue. Before assuming the problem is with the AC unit, verify that your thermostat is reading accurately and is located in a spot that reflects the actual ambient temperature in the room.

Extreme Heat Load and Home Efficiency

Thermostat Settings: Confirm it is set to “cool” rather than “fan only,” and consider whether its location might be skewing the temperature readings.
Warning Sounds: A hissing sound near the refrigerant lines can indicate a leak. Ice buildup on the refrigerant lines is another sign that the system is struggling.
